OUR STORY
The first hotel built on this site was a modest wood and iron structure, with Mr John Brennan holding the first licence in 1885. Sadly, the original building was destroyed when a fire swept through the Beverley townsite some years later.
In its place, the Joyce family—then owners of a small farm located where Walgy Farm now stands—constructed a two-storey brick building and named it the Railway Hotel. The Joyce family managed the hotel successfully for many years. By 1889, significant additions had been made, and in 1908 the Railway Hotel was described as having four sitting rooms and seventeen bedrooms.
At that time, the hotel was owned by H. Smith, with F.S. Squires serving as licensee. Over the years, several others—including W.J. Clegg, F. Cornelius, Miss Young, G. Wyatt, and more—took on the role of licensee, each contributing in their own way to improvements in the hotel's layout and operations. However, it wasn’t until the tenure of Mr George Wyatt that significant value was brought to the property.
In 1933, Mr Wyatt undertook a full-scale renovation, transforming the building into the striking Art Deco style that still defines its appearance today. He also renamed it the Hotel Beverley. While the original structure remains beneath the surface, the entire exterior was streamlined and the interior completely reimagined — including a grand entrance hall, lounge, dining room, sports bar, beer garden, and a series of updated upstairs rooms.
In 1946, Mr James Cassidy, formerly of Katanning, secured the lease from then-owner Mr H. Boys.
In 1973, the Smith family began their long-standing connection with Hotel Beverley, taking over the lease from Mr and Mrs West, who had run the hotel for around ten months. At the time, the owners were Mr and Mr and Mrs Jones, along with their children Chas and Ev. MR A.E (Eddie) Smith became the licensee, and the hotel quickly became a true family-run operation. Eddie was joined by his wife Olive, their daughter Gail and her husband Ron, as well as his son Rodney and daughter-in-law Gai —All playing a role in the daily running of the hotel.
After 19 months, Gail and Ron returned to Dongara, but the rest of the family continued to operate the hotel, renewing the lease for another five years. In 1984, the Smiths exercised their option to purchase the hotel outright.
After 22 years of ownership, the Smith family leased the Hotel Beverley to John and Glenys Lane in 1995 under a 15-year agreement.
In 2021 after falling in love with the warm atmosphere, sense of community and old style character, Shannon Dean and his wife purchased the Hotel and became Licensee and Manager.
In 2025 the Hotel Beverley was purchased by its current owners Peter and Natasha Vann.
